How to Clear Your Clogged Toilet
DB+

A clogged toilet can be a frustrating and unpleasant experience, but it’s a common problem that most homeowners will face at some point. While it may seem like a job best left to the professionals, clearing your own toilet can be a simple and straightforward process. In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps to unclog your toilet, so you can get back to using it in no time.

Step 1: Gather your tools.

To unclog your toilet, you’ll need a few basic tools, including a plunger, a bucket, gloves, and a plumbing snake.

Step 2: Turn off the water supply.

Before you start working on your toilet, make sure to turn off the water supply to prevent any further clogs. The water supply valve is usually located near the back of the toilet underneath the left side of the tank, near the wall.

Step 3: Use a plunger.

The first step in unclogging your toilet is to use a plunger. Fill the toilet bowl with enough water to cover the plunger cup and then pump the plunger vigorously up and down several times. You may have to attempt this a few times to get it to clear. If the clog is successfully removed, flush the toilet to clear any remaining debris.

Step 4: Use a bucket of water.

If the plunger doesn’t work, you can try using a bucket of water to unclog your toilet. Pour the water into the toilet bowl quickly and forcefully, which may help to break up the clog and move it through the pipes. Use caution, because the water could overflow out of the bowl if it is a stubborn clog.

Step 5: Use a plumbing snake.

If the plunger and bucket of water doesn’t work, it’s time to use a toilet auger. Insert the toilet auger into the drain and turn the handle clockwise to clear the clog.

Step 6: Call a professional.

If the clog persists after trying these methods, it may be time to call a professional plumber. At J.W. Freeman Plumbing we have the expertise and tools necessary to diagnose and repair the problem quickly and effectively.

By following these simple steps, you can quickly and effectively unclog your toilet and get back to using it as normal. While clearing your own toilet can be a cost-effective solution, don’t hesitate to call us at (352) 316-3229 if you’re unsure about how to handle a clog.
