It’s the most wonderful time of the year – but it can quickly be derailed by home plumbing problems when you have a house full of guests. Here’s a look at what you should be doing now to prepare your plumbing system:
Snake Your Drains
One of the best things you can do prior to the holiday season is prepare your drains accordingly. Aside from more food preparation, the holidays are also a time of year when you may host or even have out-of town friends and family staying with you for a period of time. This means more people flushing toilets, taking showers, washing their hands, etc. Noting this, it’s always a good idea to have your drains snaked prior to the holidays to ensure water drains adequately and avoid any potential backups.
Make Sure to Drain Grease
Tis’ the season to be cooking. Now’s the time to brush up on some plumbing basics. For instance, you never want to pour grease down the drain – it should always be drained into a container and discarded. If grease goes down the drain, it will eventually harden as it cools. And as it hardens, it can create blockages in the plumbing system that can restrict drainage and lead to backups.
Other Preparation Tips
- Know what goes down the disposal: Whether you’re discarding food scraps after cooking or need to get rid of some leftovers that have expired, not everything should go down the garbage disposal. While certain soft foods and liquids are OK to go down the drain, you never want to run anything with bones or massive amounts of leftovers through the garbage disposal.
- Prep your water heater: Now’s a good time to have your hot water heater flushed and tuned up to ensure it can deliver enough hot water to any houseguests you’ll be welcoming this holiday season.
- Issue friendly flushing reminders to your guests: It’s never a bad idea to remind any house guests that the only things that should be flushed down the toilet is waste and toilet paper. Anything else – feminine hygiene products, tissues, paper towels, napkins, cleansing wipes, etc. – can create clogs.
